EXTERIOR WALL INSULATION

Heating and cooling, or “space conditioning,” account for 50 to 70 percent of the energy used in the average American home. Many existing homes do not have adequate insulation.

There are six “insulation” zones in the U.S., but most of the country requires insulating exterior walls to a minimum of R-19. Insulation values of R19 and greater, can be achieved by either cavity insulation or cavity insulation plus insulating sheathing.

For 2x6 walls, use either 6-1/4" thick R19 or 5-1/2" thick R21 fiber glass insulation or blown cellulose.

All insulation should have a minimum of 25 percent recycled content to meet LEED criteria.
